VocalWriter Rebirth
Welcome back! It's time for some new updates to the old VocalWriter tracks... Using Logic Pro on my Mac, I am slowly working on remixing all of the original VocalWriter tracks using new background music and improving the pronunciation, timing and vocal parameters of the vocal tracks!
In addition, the old files were all 128kbit MP3 - and the new ones are highest-quality VBR MP3 for a much cleaner listening experience!
The original files were created by myself using a Macintosh G3 computer and the VocalWriter software from KAE Labs. In addition, in some of the original files I used my Yamaha synthesizer to provide a more natural or appropriate sounding backing track for the vocals. For many of these tracks I also did post-production work (adding my own reverb, setting panning for individual voices, etc) - things that VocalWriter cannot do on its own. At the time, I used mostly Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro). Each of the original files is compressed to MP3 at 128kbits.
KAE Labs released an OS X compatible version of VocalWriter in the early 2000s. Even though their site states the program does not run on Intel Macs, it turns out it runs just fine using Apple's Rosetta technology, which can dynamically translate and run PowerPC applications. There are some odd bugs - the most obvious of which is an occasional crash after exporting something to an AIFF sound file (meaning saving often is a must!). However, I have been able to utilize this version on my Snow Leopard Mac to rework some of the old vocals!
For those wondering, unfortunately even the OS X version of VocalWriter will NOT work with VoiceOver. It looks like KAE Labs simply ported their OS 9 version into OS X's "Carbon" environment but did not alter or update any of the controls themselves. This means the application is still a black hole for screen readers, unfortunately.
And also, KAE Labs seems to have all but disappeared. Their site still exists, but they have not updated it in years - they also advertised another project they were working on known as Magic Vocals (which seems like a variant of Melodyne or Auto-Tune) but even the demos which used to exist on their site have been removed. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be keeping a Snow Leopard Mac around for a while. :-)
